Episode #19 - Running Gimmicks

July 9th, 2008 · 5 Comments

Strange title, I know, but what do you do to get through those tough solo training runs? Unless you run on a treadmill surrounded by four plain white walls, chances are you ‘do’ something while you run. In this podcast, I talk about what I ‘do’ while covering the distance. Perhaps you can relate.

Dave: Enjoyed podcast #19. Especially like the “mailbag” portion of the show. Hope I can hook up with you and your training group sometime soon.

As stated, I did get my 405 and used it on 1 run so far. Numbers are a bit smaller since the screen is smaller and round in shape. I just put 2 data fields on each screen so I can see the numbers. All in all, I like it. Of course the big thing is that it looks more like a watch than the 305. My 305 and all the chargers are on the hall table and I will get it to you shortly. Can’t find the book though.

An idea for a future podcast might be a discussion of “pain” when running. We both have had our share.

Anyway, take care and see you soon.

Dave, I’m caught up on all your podcasts after my drive to NC on Thursday night…

I’ll share a couple of my running gimmicks: 1) While I enjoy my Garmin for its GPS and fancy features, when I know the route and the approximate mile markers, I enjoy doing the mental math to figure out my min/mile pace and what my projected “total training time” will be. For this reason I sometimes prefer just wearing a normal stopwatch (I have a Timex Ironman Marathon, which is pretty simple but does the job); doing the extra calculations in my head keeps my mind busy while I’m running. 2) I like designing new routes for myself, typing up turn-by-turn instructions, and carrying them with me on my training run. Then I can constantly be looking for the names of the streets to make sure I don’t miss my next turn.

Keep up the great work! Ryan

Dave, Another awesome show. I had to laugh at the comment about the dumb ass because it came out of no where. Gimmick is a great topic. I’m with you I take my digital recorder and occupy my time that way. It’s either that or my iPod, one or the other I can’t do both.

    Keep it up, buddy

” “Gimmicks!” We don’t need no stupid “Gimmicks” ” - paraphrased from Blazing Saddles. Just kidding ;>) I do the math in my head a lot. It’s surprising how challenging the simple algebra can get after 10 miles ;>)

Hey Ashland Dave. My friend Brandon (who has the “Brandon’s Marathon Podcast”) is struggling with boredom during long runs, so I’m going to point him here.

My main gimmick is “Running with the Pack” (also the name of my podcast, located at http://parkedthoughts.com or on iTunes). I like to run with friends or with my dog when I can. I love doing races, not to win them, but to enjoy the company of running with others. When I have to run solo, I like to run where I can see other people — either fellow runners or just people walking around town. Sometimes I make up stories in my head about who they are and what they’re doing.

I like to listen to other running podcasters because that gives me a similar feeling of running with someone else. When I did the Flying Pig marathon, I talked into a recorder at the beginning and it felt like I was running with someone.

Like some of the other people have commented, I like listening to music and non-running podcasts like “This American Life”. I have also done math in my head to calculate race paces, weekly mileage, and such.

Finally, I work full time and I’m in a PhD program, so when work or classes get stressful, there is nothing like a long run to help me burn off the stress and think through my problems.

Anyway, I wanted to let you know that I’ve become a regular listener. The reenacted Patrick Henry speech gave me goosebumps.
