Dave - Wanted to check in and find out how the Graveyard 100 training is going. I finished my last "long" run of my cycle last weekend. I ran the Callaway Gardens marathon and tacked on another 7-8 miles after it for good measure. Aside from the fact that I couldn't seem to make myself slow down much, it went fine. No issues other than a touch of quad soreness the next day, but I was running again by 2 days later.

Anywho, everything is progressing according to plan and I'm 2 weeks away from the Iron Horse 100. I'm doing an 18 miler tonight and that will about the extent of my long runs before the race. Take it a bit easier next week and I'm planning on laying completely off running the final week before the race. I've never attempted to do that before, but I think it's a good idea with 100k coming up. We'll see.

Oh, btw, dig this.. I entered this goofy contest on Facebook with Nathan Hydration. Long story, but I ended up winning 1st place in the thing, and they're sending me a Nathan Hydration prize pack worth $250. How's that for Suweeeet?

Couldn't believe it since I never, ever win anything. If they send me something that I already own, I'll ping you and see if you might need it. No need in letting it gather dust in my garage.

Let me know how training is going, Dave. I trust all is well with the family. Talk to you on the next episode.

Dave -

Listened to your latest podcast...see ya at the Charlotte 50K! I has the same issues as you...emailed promoter, asked about point to point course, was told it's out and back...then found out that it's 5 times out and back!

Note this article that was posted on the race website:

Thanks, see you near the back of the pack.

50 mile week? That's solid, D. I'm nearing 50 on most weeks also, but I don't think I've tipped the scale over it yet. As for long run during the training cycle, my longest is slated to be a 50k about 4 weeks before race day. Just for my own curiosity though, I'm actually going to put in a 40 miler around that date instead. I just want to build up the mental toughness leading up to race day, and I think a 40 will do the trick. Especially considering how the TNF 50 miler kicked my butt up and down Pine Mountain back in Oct.

Hey man, have a great Christmas holiday with the family. It's hard to believe 2012 is nearly on us, but here's to another solid year of fodder for the podcast!

Take care, Dave

I am keeping up with you and your podcasts Dave. It has been so busy at work that some days I pull up your podcast, start listening, and end up pausing it several times throughout the day until I get to the end.

I continue to enjoy your perspective on all things running and me being a newer runner, find motivation in your training ups and downs and your races reports. I did my first ever 15 miler last weekend (distance PR) through First Landing State Park and was encouraged when I finished that I had some left and my first ever marathon might not just be a long term goal but something a little sooner.

Thanks for tackling such a wide variety of topics while at the same time relating them back to running. Look forward to seeing you next time you are in the Tidewater area .....................or who knows I might make it up to the center of the universe and pop in on you. :)

Dave -

Noted your podcast while listening to Dirt Dawg...synced it to my Zune and I'm a new listener. Thanks for the Mountain Masochist report...I've done it 2-3 times and know what it's like to chase the cut off times.

Gave you a shout out on my blog:

Enjoyed re-living the race through the podcast. Thanks again for the great support.

Having a crew & pacer makes the whole ultra experience that much more enjoyable.

Looking forward to crewing for the Graveyard 100.

Thanks again!

Continue to catch up on your past shows as well as your newest one and you have a knack for easy conversation and making the show not only relevant to all things running but truly enjoyable.

Very glad you are back in the groove, increasing your mileage and enjoying some much anticipated cooler temps.

As too the Wrong Way issue, I absolutely agree with your frustration and knowing how I sometimes speak or gesture before I fully think it out, I might have been a bit rude to them out loud.

We are anticipating bad things here in VB with Irene so I will most likely be offline for a few days, I think I have a podcast or two on my mp3 player. I am also wondering how much and how often I will be able to run over the next day and week but since it is leading into the Rock&Roll weekend, I guess a little tapering won't hurt. Good luck at PM 1/2 as I think you guys are still on for tomorrow. Looking forward to a race report.

Run Long and Run Strong my friend.

Dave

Really enjoyed this episode.

Since the Summer heat has beaten you up a bit, the past couple of shows have seemed different, just because you havent had the running enthusiasm that you normally do. It's good to see you back in the game and excited about your training progresz for the upcoming half and 10 miler.

As for the frequency of the show, man it's fine to be shooting for bi weekly. While I would enjoy a weekly episode, that's just too much effort to pull off without being fired and/or divorced. I "save up" your newest episodes for my long runs, so anything you put out is welcome in my book.

North Face 50 miler @ pine mtn is in 7 weeks. Can't wait.

Here is my opinion on marathon times. Everyone's relationship with the marathon is personal. If it is not, then you're missing something. Each marathon brings different conditions, different courses, different training situations, etc. Each marathon finish is something special, finishing with a friend or spouse brings a different but equally great sense of satisfaction. Struggling through to the finish line on a "bad" day brings a sense self accomplishment (although maybe not immediately) & makes you tougher. Struggling through heat, floods, sub-zero temps all bring a different sense of personal satisfaction.

I get a little misty eyed watching the biggest loser contestants finish their marathon at the end of the season, I know their pain (probably a lot more than mine) in getting to the finish line.

Comparing marathon times is like comparing your kids, you shouldn't do it.

My new tag line - the marathon, it's personal!

Nice job on the podcast as usual Dave and good luck to Lumex on the 10 miler. Nice report on Greg's 40 mile attempt.

Yes, yes, yes dude. dailymile.com is the reason I am still running, it is my daily motivation, my accountability, and I have made great friends, most of them you met at Greg's. You need to be on it if you are not!!!!! Yes, our group of dailymile friends meets monthly in Chesapeake at Kelly's for dinner, to show off race bling, and talk about running and fitness and other things. We also keep up on dailymile of where each of us will be at races and always meet up before and after. Those men and women are now some of my best friends. You need motivation? http://www.dailymile.com will give it to you.

I enjoyed the discussion on the marathoners that run/finish between 4-5 hours. I haven't attempted one yet, a half being my longest race, but my hats off to everyone who has completed a marathon.

I do question whether a finisher, who for whatever reason plays out after say 18 miles and walks the last 8.2, is someone who has "run" marathon, in actuality you ran 18 miles and walked 8.2.

On the other hand, I wholeheartedly am on board with a walk/run process and have seen benefits of this in my own longer training runs as I ramp up distance, or walking through water stops during a 99 degree 1/2 marathon to ensure proper hydration.

Very good podcast Dave. Look forward to the next.

I do question whether a finisher, who for whatever reason plays out after say 18 miles and walks the last 8.2, is someone who has “run” marathon, in actuality you ran 18 miles and walked 8.2.

Dave - The Graveyard 100 looks insane. I'm intrigued, but nowhere close to being willing to run something like that. If you need crew, let me know -- I'd love to be there to see you do it.

I'm also interested in your on-going experience with Camelback. I'm going to need a hydration pack for my Grand Canyon run and this is helping me make the decision about which brand to buy.

Dave - omg... man, you can't put that kind of episode out without a little more descriptive warning on the front end!

So, I queue part 2 to play as I'm about 11 miles into my 14 miler the other night. I started the long run around midnight, so it's around 1:20 am Sunday morning as I'm listening to the show. I got to the "nitty gritty" part, and I nearly face planted in the road because I was laughing so hard I couldn't even breathe. The more you talked about your explosive diarrhea, the more times I ran off the side of the road because my eyes were completely closed as I was laughing uncontrollably..

Seriously, the next time you put out the "nitty gritty" (and might I add "shitty") content, give a brother some warning on the front side, ok???

it still hurts to laugh, 2 days later...
