I think you hit an important point about running alone / running with friends. I find I thrive with a mix of solo / group runs. I think you described the differences well — I sort out my own personal junk a LOT when I am out there on my own. When I run with a group, I get a chance to connect with other people and the time really flies.
In 2007, when I coached a half marathon team for long runs on Saturday, I also ran with a marathing training team on Sunday morning — but as a participant. As a coach, I reviewed the route in advance, I showed up early, I stayed late, I talked to as many people as I could. As a marathon team participant - I showed up, I ran, I talked to one or two friends. I really needed more of a solo experience on Sundays.
I still have no use for tread mill runs — but that’s a personal choice.

Thanks for the podcast. It’s a great motivator / support tool.

Listened yesterday - great episode!
Wow, can’t believe you’re committing to the 50-mile run. After your 40 (+2), I remember when you said it would be tough for your wife to let you attempt the 50 anytime soon!
In any case, I have an idea for one of your ultra-length training runs: you should run between houses of TI members, picking us up along the way, and the last person can drive you back. What do you think?

Dave: Enjoyed # 88. You have come a long way and put together a polished show.
Regarding running alone, I find I just don’t have the discipline to really go long. I need running partners or a race of some sort. Funny, I don’t talk all that much when I am running with friends but if I feel good I like to open up some space between us. Invariably, they catch me at the next uphill. [smile]
Hate to be last so I guess it is a motivator which I don’t have when I run alone.
Again great show and I notice I have you beat by a couple of minutes on your PB for a 10 miler. My guess is you have only done one. [smile]
Run safe, Dad

Great podcast Dave!! That’s really interesting that you’d like the longer runs to last longer. As I get older, I am trying to teach myself to enjoy solitude- something that I’ve never been comfortable with. Keep up the good work!! Meriwether

I like Ryan’s idea of running by the TI members houses and have us join you. What time are visiting the Rolfe area??
Im very much like John in regards to enjoying the group run but also need solo time as well. Nothing beats the pressures of the work day, kids, house chores than I good quality hard solo run. It “me” time
Its awesome that Bob from Kenya has found your podcast. Bob & I have logged a bunch of miles through the Rolfe area. oh and fyi.. that old dude can fly!!
50 miles.. you rock!! Im still waiting for when you pull a “Dean Karnazes” and you order a pizza delivered to a street corner so you can fuel up and keep on getting it.
Keep up the podcast.
